Local Attractions

Franklin County Courthouse

  Mt. Vernon, located in beautiful Northeast Texas, is 80 miles west of Texarkana and 100

  miles east of Dallas via Interstate 30. The town is rich in historic preservation, with 60

  pre World War II historic homes and restored Courthouse.


  Franklin County Courthouse, built of Indiana limestone in 1912, is the center of activity in

  the county. The courthouse was restored and updated with the addition of an elevator in

  1986 and qualified for a State Historical Marker, which is displayed at the entrance. The

  courthouse has county, state and district offices on three floors.


 Lake Cypress Springs  



Beautiful Lake Cypress Springs is located 10 miles south of Mt. Vernon on  FM 115 

and FM 21.  Lake Cypress Springs is 7.8 miles long and covers about 3,400 acres.

Fishing, water sports, and camping are available to the public.




Mt. Vernon Schools

  The Mt. Vernon Schools are centrally located on one campus with all

  athletic facilities adjacent. With high academic emphasis, the school

  is a regular winner of scholastic events and students rank above

  normal on achievement tests and college entrance exams.

Mt. Vernon was officially named a Texas Main Street city in 1992. The Main Street program

is a self-help development program designed to capitalize on the unique character of the

downtown area while promoting aggressive marketing and management techniques.

  nostalgic town square. It's a step back into time as you shop and

  eat at locations that have been in business since the turn of the

  century. Visit the Public Library ( a restored turn-of-the-century bank)

  or the old city hall which houses a Museum with changing natural

  and local history collections, plus a huge collection of mounted

  Texas butterflies and song bird eggs. 




 Located on the plaza in downtown Mt. Vernon, a beautiful gazebo stands on the original

 site of the Franklin County Courthouse  and renders to the splendor and charm of our

 nostalgic downtown.  A place to sit, relax and enjoy the warmth of our small town.
